Packing up your household and moving to a new home can seem like an overwhelming task, especially if you are moving to another state or country. It can seem easier if you divide the move into three tasks: Moving your household goods, moving your automobiles, and moving the essential parts of your life.
To move your household belongings, most people either rent a moving truck or hire a moving company. A moving company will load the truck, drive it for you, and unload at your new destination. Some will even pack up everything for you, but of course this option is expensive. The least expensive option is to rent the truck, pack it, and drive it yourself. Naturally, if you are driving the truck then you have to think about moving your automobile.
Moving your car can be a pain. One option is to tow it behind the moving truck; however, if you aren’t experienced driving a large truck you will have your hands full as it is. The best option in this case is to arrange for auto transport with a reputable company. The company can move your vehicle safely and efficiently while you tend to everything else. The last option, of course, is to simply drive the car yourself if you hired movers to drive the truck. This might be fine for short-distance moves, but for long distance moves will take up a lot of valuable time. If you do decide to drive, have your vehicle inspected thoroughly to make sure the oil has been changed, tires are in good shape, and your engine can handle a long-distance trip. The last thing you need is to break down and require emergency roadside assistance right in the middle of a big move.
Moving the rest of your life may actually be the most taxing part. Keep a list of important things to remember, such as health insurance, social security benefits, and other services you might need to have transferred to your new address. Pack birth certificates and other important documents separately (not in the moving truck) and keep them with you. Last but not least, make sure to change your address prior to moving so that there is not a long delay in receiving your mail.
